The selection process for joining the Indian Army as an officer is rigorous. It consists of the following stages:

Can a commerce student join the Indian Army as an officer?
- Through the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination. The NDA is a tri-service academy that trains cadets for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the NDA examination twice a year. Commerce students can apply for the NDA examination but must have Mathematics as a compulsory subject in their 10+2 examination.
- Through the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination. The CDS examination is conducted twice a year by the UPSC to recruit commissioned officers in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Commerce students are eligible to apply for the CDS examination. Still, they can only opt for the Indian Military Academy (IMA) or the Officers Training Academy (OTA) if they are successful in the examination.
